I’m aware we have quite a few members who are located in Canada, recently while searching around the internet web, I came across a tweet by “ItsFunneh” claiming that she is concerned regarding “Bill #C11” and that it will hurt “Content Creators” to grow on the global free market.
Bill C-11 seems to be a trending topic among people in Canada; Bill C-11 is essentially the “Online streaming act” , this allows the “Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commissions” regulatory powers over all audiovisual content on the Internet, including content on Platforms.
How does Bill C-11 impact users and creators?
Content creators could receive less revenue
Users can lose control of the viewing experience
Why do people not like Bill C-11?
Canadian content is something that limits what you can and can’t do when publishing content, this means that your content must much the “Canadian content” guidelines in order to be published.
In Canada CanCon (Canadian Content) is already active on radio or TV, Bill C-11 is now trying to bring CanCon to online platforms such as YouTube.
Right now Bill C-11 gives the CTRC (Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission) the right to:
Dictate how your content appears on digital platforms. (E.g YouTube)
Viewers may be pushed to watch content they’re not interested in, resulting in more skips lowering revenue.
Companies with large legal teams will have an easy time adjusting to the new guidelines, smaller creators may find it difficult understanding the laws.
Conclusion
Let’s try make this right, if your in Canada right now, speak to your friends and families about the situation, some people may not even know about these laws, spread the word.
Talk about it on social media and spread it around.
Personally I would really like to get the Canadians on the forums view on this situation, I would also appreciate if you vote on the poll down below.
Thanks to chloegames for a lot of the information found in this topic. :- )
As a Canadian Citizen and as a resident of the capital city I have gone to the parliament to protest and advocate against bill C-11. You can see friend JJ’s video about it here.
The problem is, when you have two minority governments backing the bill including multi million dollar corporations nobody really wants to hear the other side. This bill threatens the integrity of Canadian Creators aswell as the average Canadian viewer. The fact is that nobody really uses the Radio or cable tv anymore, and big Canadian Media companies are trying to salvage the last of what they have left by harming the other side.
I urge you to contact your local MP if you live in Canada or if you’re a global citizen write a letter to the minister of international trade
This matter could also turn into a Segway to hurt the upcoming technologies as well.
Okay, so, I found out about this a few days ago, and as a Canadian, I have a few thoughts:
What content will the government push back, and why?
Doesn’t this violate our internet privacy act?
Many content creators won’t be able to grow their channel because of this.
When you said two minority governments, I’m assuming Liberals and NDP (I once got to play the prime minister in a social studies project, not to go off topic), Liberals and NDP share power, but there’s still hope.
This is a bill which means, parliament has to vote (like in America), so it’s possible it won’t pass.
Like @25swrld said, I highly encourage you to contact your local MP as soon as possible.
Furthermore, the government is merely dismissing our requests to strike down the Bill C-11. What ever happened to freedom of speech? Personally, I believe this law is useless and just makes Canadians enjoy the experience of the internet much less than before.
Yes, that is correct. I’m interested to see what those parties have to say, especially with the Conservative party. They and the Liberals are rivals, and so far the Conservative party has been supporting the opinion to get rid of Bill C-11.
I believe the bill must pass not only through the Parliament, but through the Senate as well (unless I got mixed up with something else).
We are, yes. However, currently the Government of Canada is not really following along (in other words, doesn’t really care) about what we are saying … not at the moment, at least.
That’s … kind of why I said that I believe the bill is useless. Additionally, as @Noah stated, “CanCon is already active on radio or TV, Bill C-11 is now trying to bring CanCon to online platforms such as YouTube,” as per quote below.
Yeah, although I’m not sure why the Canadian government would find American and elsewhere content as “harmful” to the Canadian nation … it [online content] hasn’t really caused any issues towards Canada, at least from what I’ve seen.
However, I assume part of why they introduced Bill C-11 could possibly be due to the recent political strain and economical downfalls that have been occurring within Canada since the beginning of 2022.
Yes that is true. But again, nothing happened to freedom of speech so I’m not really sure why you put that there.
Useless in what way. The bill will bring in more funding for larger Canadian Broadcasting Corporations
Again I dont support Bill C-11 but the definition of useless is something that is of no use. This is of use, just not the good kind.
Canada has been in an economic downfall since late 2020. It’s a recession.
Also I disagree. Big media corporations saw that the recession was happening and saw that they needed to salvage a bit of what they have left. Platforms like Youtube and Tiktok were taking away from them so they needed to get a bit of what they had left back. So they used Lobbyists to bring the bill C-11 proposal in early February and only now is it entering its larger stages. However this doesn’t really have much to do with a recession. More of the fact that technology is advancing and the way we view content is no longer on cable tv like we used to.
