Meep City - What happened?

What did just happen?

We all know hugely popular (especially in the 2018 era) was recently been shut down or queued for moderation by robox just 3 hours ago at 2022-02-17T22:00:00Z.

Promptly, in just under 3 hours the game was back online & running, however, something has changed within the game, if you are a regular meep city player you may have noticed that the map has been changed, the “Parties” feature within meep city has been removed.

MeepCity “Parties” were a common feature within the game that allowed players in the game to join
invite specific lobbies, that people can customize to their liking.

Why were Parties removed?

MeepCity Parties have been known for being very controversial for the reason that is common to find Online Dating, Inappropriate Interactions and other actions that are not suitable for the Roblox platform.

Roblox probably picked up on this issue and decided to intervene by closing the game.

They probably notified the creator of the game who promptly deleted this feature.

My take on this.

I’ve heard that parties were a large part of the game and were a feature that many people enjoyed.

The developer of the game, “alexnewtron” is not active on Roblox anymore meaning that the game has no moderation or management systems integrated into this. I believe safety is the priority, but this must suck, not only for the player base losing a valuable feature but also the developer. It must be exhausting and tedious having to work on these features & then having to immediately remove them to have your game up on the platform.

In addition to that, for us developers, it can be tricky to moderate large games such as MeepCity, as developers we don’t have many tools that allow us to monitor and review activity that goes on in the game.

I think this was down to AlexNetron’s lack of activity but also Roblox failing to provide proper and adequate moderation services and moderation tools to Roblox.

Roblox took a short way out & now it’s going to affect a large games player base.

What do you think?

That’s enough chatting, out of curiosity, what are your views on this topic, do you think this was down to Roblox, or down to the creators of Meepcity or both.

I would love to hear what you have to say in a reply,

@cookie :octopus:

I just saw something pretty concerning, the RTC twitter account just posted this:

UPDATE: MeepCity appears to have been modified by infamous hacker Tubers93. Please avoid playing the game until then. The game is back online, but parties have been removed!

Hopefully this is nothing serious, a wide-server hacking like this can be very dangerous for a game with such a huge community.

(We don’t know if this is true yet & that the hacker has actually hacked the game, but we can’t confirm anything yet.)

The hackers twitter account is active and clearly showing that they may have something to do with the hacking of MeepCity:

For one thing, MeepCity is extremely innapropriote for young chidren, but hacking is also another thing. I’m puzzled on why a hacker would hack MeepCity, it doesn’t seem worth it to me except for the revenue perhaps.

I agree, the main fan base of MeepCity is children, and imagine their parents seeing the content of the parties. In my opinion, the bypassed clothing people are pretty immature.

This is just unbelievable. First Roblox puts the game under review, the head developer of MeepCity takes down the party system completely, and they put it back up? After all these violations of children safety online? They just want money.

Think about how unfair this could be for the owner though, they need to find a middle point, it’s going to be pretty nasty deleting someone’s game who has no bad intent?

I completely agree. Insanely unfair. Them: MONEY MONEY MONEY

But we need to also think of the developers in this case too!

Like I said above:

Yes, this is true … but the developers were likely already aware of this after years of complaints. They should consider creating a more children-friendly game.

Ah, but now you think about the developers who have no tools to do anything, they either have to delete an entire feature or wait until they get forced to.

Look at this graph:

Must suck for the developers of the game.
