You may be able to argue that you’ve seen this man in your dreams. Maybe he helped you out, maybe he showed you the way. What if I told you this was all an insanely elaborate hoax? That’s what it was.
The storyline
Over 2,000 people have reportedly seen this man from 2006 onwards (I know I have), it started back in 2006 when a patient told their psychiatrist they’d been seeing a man in their dreams repeatedly, that they have no memory of ever meeting. They drew a picture of the man (see fig. 1), said psychiatrist reported that other patients shortly after began bringing up this man. Then, the psychiatrist sent this photo to other psychiatrists, only to find out their patients have brought this man up too.
An actual living human that looks similar to this man has never been found. His voice also is unidentifiable, however it’s always much harder for you to remember the audio portion of a dream. People came forward in an attempt to gain popularity by claiming they are this man, such as Kannan Ayya, without any evidence however.
The uprise
Although the hoax was created in 2008 (yes, the 2006 part of the story was also fake), it didn’t start gaining popularity until 2009. In October, it gained over 2 million views and received over 10,000 emails from people seeing this man in their dreams.
The Downfall
When the hoax became popular, 4Chan users began speculating this man was a marketing ploy, as they discovered that the website was hosted by the same company who also owned a gorilla marketing website. The owner did eventually admit to this being a ploy, however never admitted what for.
A… movie?!?!
In May 2010, a movie company purchased this man and announced they were turning it into a movie.

“I have always had this dream of flying in the sky over my city and observing my friends from up there. Since I moved to another house I started meeting this man while flying. Not every single time that I have this dream about flying, but often enough. He flies too, but he never speaks.”

Suddenly this man appeared and I started running away from him. He chased after me for what seemed like an hour until I found myself against a wall in the kids’ area in a supermarket.
